Converting an Overseas Motorcycle Licence

Converting Your Overseas Motorcycle Licence to a Victorian Licence

If you’re moving to Victoria, Australia, and hold a valid overseas motorcycle licence, you can convert it to a Victorian motorcycle licence. The process is straightforward but requires specific steps to ensure you meet Victorian motorbike licence regulations.

To do an overseas licence conversion, you first need to pass both the learner permit (2-day course) and the on-road licence assessment. Upon successful completion if you hold a full, unrestricted motorcycle licence and you have recorded and verified it at VicRoads you then gain a full unrestricted (probationary or automatic conditions may apply to some) motorcycle licence in Victoria.

Before you begin your licence conversion, you need to be over 18 years old, hold a Victorian car licence OR have passed the road law and hazard perception tests within the last 12 months. If you have any medical conditions or take any medication, these must be approved by VicRoads.

Step 1: Check Eligibility

First, confirm that your overseas licence is valid and not expired. You can usually convert licences from countries that have reciprocal agreements with Australia. If you are unsure, visit the VicRoads website for a comprehensive list of eligible countries.

Step 2: Take Your Overseas Licence to VicRoads

You will need to take your existing overseas car licence to VicRoads and convert it to a Victorian Drivers Licence. You will also need to take your overseas motorcycle licence and have it recorded and verified by VicRoads before you can proceed with the licence conversion.

Step 3: Pass the Learner Permit Course

Once your overseas licence has been recorded and verified by VicRoads, you will need to undertake the mandatory two day Learner Permit course. Contact Allstar Motorcycle Training on (03) 9706 8758 or book online to enrol in the course.

To prepare for the course, you will need to read the Victorian Rider Handbook which is available for free online.

Make sure you arrive to your course with all skin covered (long sleeves, pants, and sensible, closed-toed shoes). Allstar Motorcycle Training will provide you with a helmet, gloves and bike/scooter.

After you have passed the Learner Permit course, you can choose to undertake a Check Ride. While it is recommended, it is not mandatory to pass a Check Ride for overseas licence conversions.

If you book online use SAVE10 to receive a $10.00 discount (not applicable on public holidays).

Step 4: Pass the Licence Test

If you are converting an overseas motorbike licence to a Victorian motorbike licence, you can immediately book in for your Licence Test following completion of your Learner Permit Course, there is no mandatory waiting period between undertaking the two tests.

Step 5: Receive Your Victorian Licence

After successfully completing the necessary tests, you will receive your Victorian motorcycle licence. Keep in mind that if you were riding under a probationary licence in your home country, you might have a similar probation period in Victoria.
